The ford mustang defined the pony-car segment in 1964; plymouth's barracuda may have beaten ford to the showroom by 16 days, but it was the mustang that set the sales records. The 'cuda is gone now, and so are the camaro, firebird, cougar, javelin, challenger, and every other would-be rival, leaving ford's pony to prance alone. At least for now. for 2007, the 210-hp mustang v6 and 300-hp mustang gt are joined by the new 500-hp supercharged shelby gt500, offering its own look, tuning, and equipment. available in fastback coupe or convertible body styles, the mustang v6 models make nice, stylish cruisers. The gt is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The shelby gt500 adds to the fun with its near-corvette performance. It's quite tossable, making for good sport on gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. It delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades, but it's smoother and quieter and better built than older models. its interior looks like a throwback from the '60s, but it's functional and well finished. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate. shelby convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. interiorthe mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function. there's a heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like the old days). Another interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. It can be equipped with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or a long bed (8-foot), two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat, v6 or v8. the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees and have roll-down windows. The sierra and silverado share mechanical components, with the exception of the unique features found on the sierra denali. compared with the previous-generation (pre-2007) models, the current frame is 234 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. This yields a smoother ride and better handling. It also allowed the engineers to reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment as well as the gaps between fenders and bumpers, all of which enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. the front suspension uses a coil-over-shock setup and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame. Even compared to more recently introduced or re-engineered models from ford, dodge, and nissan, the sierra rides and handles very well. new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable sierra 1500 crew cab available with 2wd or 4wd, in sle or slt trim. Built with a new 5-foot, 8-inch cargo box the new 1500 crew cab is shorter than extended-cab trucks and is designed for easier parking and maneuverability. Crew cab models offer a rear-seat dvd entertainment center as an option, making these pickups an attractive alternative to a full-size suv. gmc sierra’s current design dates from 1999, but it was significantly refined and updated last year, with a bolder, more raked front end. Its interior was revised as well, for improved function and appearance. The brakes were upgraded, and the engines tuned to run cleaner. these are great tow vehicles. The 2500/3500 hd models come with a 300-horsepower, 6. 0-liter v8. Carpeting and cloth seats are also standard. The w/t (work truck) package is now available on all sierra models. The w/t deletes the front-end chrome and carpeting, and substitutes vinyl seats, for a credit of $200-$700, depending on cab style. sle trim adds a cd player, fog lamps, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Leather upholstery is optional. Slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds automatic air conditioning, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and onstar telecommunications. sierra denali, the flagship of the fleet, is an extended-cab, short-bed 4x4. Denali packs a 325-horsepower version of the 6. 0-liter v8, along with automatic transmission and an exclusive, sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali comes with onstar, tone-on-tone leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, a unique console and other exclusive amenities. It's equipped with steering wheel controls for the audio system, onstar, trip computer, and other programmable functions. Quadrasteer comes packaged with a limited-slip differential and a trailer-tow package. walkaroundthe front styling of the gmc sierra ties it closely to the mid-size gmc envoy, and to some of the great gmc pickups of the past. The chrome-framed grille consists of three black horizontal bars that prominently display a big red gmc emblem. Chromed front bumpers include two airflow cutouts. Up-level models have a body-colored lower front fascia; base models have a light-charcoal fascia. compared with the chevy silverado, gmc’s styling is more conservative, more mature, with smoother, more sophisticated lines. An optional grille/brush guard adds front-end protection. A single onstar roof antenna combines the gps and cell-phone functions. the load height (the distance from the ground to the bed) for 2wd sierra models is just 31. 6 inches. For 4wd models, it's 33. 7 inches. all gmc sierras are built on the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever produced. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large steel components. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. interiorthe gmc sierra cab remains among the roomiest in the industry, with large door openings to aid entry and exit. The interior was extensively redesigned for 2003. the seats are big and cushy. Other pickup owners find the gm seats more to their liking. Also, the interior door handles are ropey and awkward. the instrument cluster features highly legible gauges with white backlighting and orange pointers. The denali’s gauges feature blue backlighting and white pointers. A driver information center reports on as many as 27 vehicle functions with an easy-to-read, single-line lcd display. A compass is incorporated into the overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. audio and climate controls, which were introduced for 2003, are sophisticated, yet easy to operate. The system comes with am, fm1, fm2, xm1, and xm2 bands. Optional audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes. It includes a storage compartment and a 12-volt power outlet at the rear. (all sierras come with three 12-volt power outlets at the bottom center of the dash.) vents and hvac controls for rear-seat passengers are mounted on the rear of the center console on crew cabs and extended cabs. extended-cab models offer surprisingly good back seat accommodations. Climb through the reverse-opening rear door and find a seat that’s reasonably comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be loosened from the floor with a wrench and removed through one of the side doors. Not exactly quick release, but a useful feature. the rear seats in the crew cab models are as roomy as the second-row of seats in a suburban. With optional leather, a crew cab feels truly luxurious. Rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down, providing a large protected cargo area inside the cab. a panasonic dvd system 995) is available for the 1500 crew cab, turning it into a real family vehicle. The system comes with a seven-inch flip-down screen for watching dvd movies and cartoons, a cd player, two sets of wireless headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs. safety is enhanced with dual-stage airbags (1500 only), which deploy with less force in less-severe collisions. An automatic passenger-sensing system assesses whether the occupant in the seat is an adult or child, based on weight and seat belt tension, and deactivates the passenger-side air bag accordingly. An indicator light in the rearview mirror lets the driver know when the airbag is deactivated. Three-point seat belts are provided in all first and second-row seat positions. driving impressionno question, gmc sierra represents a great line of full-size pickups. On the road, the sierra is quiet and well behaved, more so than other full-size pickups. It's stable at high speeds, particularly the longer wheelbase (143. 5-inch) models. It rides well and handles well. the 5300 v8 makes for an enjoyable engine around town and on the interstate. Retrowagen gets more performance. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel trucks that inspired the design of the hhr. based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr competes most closely with the chrysler pt cruiser, but also with honda element, ford escape, and jeep liberty. for 2008, the hhr lineup gets a new high-performance ss model. we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy. the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and rear cargo doors with no handles. The rear cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it’s more spartan inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage. the hhr ss is the most fun to drive, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. On an autocross circuit, we found it handled like a sports car. the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however. And the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather. the chevrolet hhr remains relatively unchanged for 2007 with the exception of slightly more powerful engines and a few additional new color choices. New exterior color options for 2007 include imperial blue metallic and golden teal metallic; a new interior color option is ebony. lineupthe 2008 chevy hhr comes in three distinctively different configurations: hhr, hhr panel, and the new hhr ss. It comes in several trim levels, including the base ls and two lt grades. The ss comes with a high-performance 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine. the ls 16,515) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a substantial level of standard features and equipment. The pioneer sound system is optional. The base hhr panel ls 16,820) is equipped similarly to the five-passenger ls. safety features include optional front and rear side-curtain airbags 395). Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Stabilitrak electronic stability control is now standard across the entire hhr model range. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling treatment served up by the hhr across the model range. The closest comparison to the chevy hhr is the chrysler pt cruiser. Both fill a respective need in their individual camps. the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined with flat side wheel well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with integrated running boards offering another nostalgic touch. The flush glass all around, including the windshield is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The tail light treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban. front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear lift gate. The cargo doors are smooth and don’t have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside. the hhr ss sits 6 mm lower than it stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The new front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the chrome surround grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for single bright exhaust tip. New rocker moldings resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and rear lift gate further differentiate the ss from its stable mates. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. Also, the door lock button is positioned so that it interferes in driving and resting one's left arm on the window sill, a traditional and nostalgic pose. cubby storage is limited. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear lift gate is one piece, and raises easily. solid rear quarter panels are available in place of the windows on all five-passenger models (via a window delete option). the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor, with tie-down points located strategically on the floor with available, floor mats that allow for easier movement of cargo. The hhr panel features a flat load floor featuring a rubberized floor that provides utility and functionality for commercial or lifestyle activities. the hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large, storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats in the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables. the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. Three interior color combinations are available: ebony, light gray and victory red. A special gm performance driver’s seat, providing added lateral support and spirited driving comfort is optional and we think it's a must. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec (an upgrade that comes as part of the 2lt package) is an impressive and versatile engine. The torque peak figure at such high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. At least for now. for 2007, the 210-hp mustang v6 and 300-hp mustang gt are joined by the new 500-hp supercharged shelby gt500, offering its own look, tuning, and equipment. available in fastback coupe or convertible body styles, the mustang v6 models make nice, stylish cruisers. The gt is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The shelby gt500 adds to the fun with its near-corvette performance. It's quite tossable, making for good sport on gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. It delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades, but it's smoother and quieter and better built than older models. its interior looks like a throwback from the '60s, but it's functional and well finished. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of pony-car heritage. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967-70 models. yet the mustang follows modern trends by offering ever-larger wheels, including two distinct 18-inch wheel designs for the gt. The modern mustang is based on the same mechanical platform as the jaguar s-type, albeit with some cost-trimming measures such as its live-axle rear suspension. relative to previous mustangs, everything under the car has been substantially upgraded. The brakes are bigger by nearly 20 percent. A completely new front and rear suspension yields a much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering. New engines deliver performance with efficiency. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any a fighting chance in bad situations. all mustang engines are secured to the body with hydraulic mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. like its muscle-era namesake, the shelby gt500 stands out with a unique front grille and bumper fascia, providing both a functionally larger and unimpeded air intake, while reducing air flow under the body. A unique engine hood with dual air-extraction slits is domed to clear the larger, 5. 4-liter engine. Carroll shelby's signature striking-cobra emblem glowers from the gas cap and from a characteristically off-center position in the grille. The whole package rides on unique 18-inch rims sporting ford's svt (special vehicle team) logo. Just as in 1968, coupes are topped by le mans-style racing stripes. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate. shelby convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. interiorthe mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function. there's a heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like the old days). Another interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. 2008 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. One of ford's best gets better. introductionthe ford escape has been thoroughly updated for 2008, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it america's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. The escape's standard safety features are upgraded significantly for 2008. we'd call the escape a little truck among small suvs. Its new styling deliberately invokes ford's larger, truck-based expedition and explorer sport-utilities. Escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class. yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of best epa mileage ratings in the class. All, including the gas-electric hybrid, are offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. For the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of the typical sedan. Interior storage options have improved considerably. The finish is more upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best. safety features that were extra-cost options on lower-trim models are now standard across the board, including ford's roll stability control system. Escape now sets the class benchmark for safety features. there's a ford escape model for most tastes and needs. Dollar for feature, ford escape prices have dropped considerably the past few years. The premium for the escape hybrid has also decreased. It's now less than $2,000 more than a comparably equipped limited. the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels. the escape xlt 20,880) and xlt 4wd 22,360) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. The cargo convenience group 395) includes a retractable cargo area cover and a compartmentalized rear storage bin. The audiophile package 695) includes a high-power stereo with seven speakers, subwoofer and the in-dash cd changer. The limited luxury package 795) adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and a back-up warning system. The audiophile and navigation package 2,695) includes the stereo upgrade and ford's touch-screen navigation system; in the hybrid, it also adds a meter that graphically and immediately demonstrates the benefits of hybrid drive, and helps the driver maximize fuel economy. Other options include cruise control 225), cd changer 295), a power moonroof 795), floor mats 55), 16-inch alloy wheels 375), 17-inch chromed wheels 695), and a class ii towing package 345). safety features have been upgraded substantially for 2008, making equipment that was previously optional on lower trim levels standard across the board, and setting the class benchmark for small sport-utilities. Passive safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. Rsc adds a second gyroscopic roll-rate sensor to the typical stability control package, measuring the escape's roll angle and roll rate and applying countermeasures (such as braking one of the wheels or reducing power) to increase rollover resistance. walkaroundthe 2008 ford escape has been re-styled more thoroughly than a quick glance might suggest. None of its major body panels are common to previous models, but the redesign is evolutionary and the most obvious changes are in the details, or jewelry, as designers call them. In an impressionistic way, the new escape will look familiar to those who have owned previous escapes, or those who pay attention to what others drive. as such, the new escape has the air of a conventional, truck-based suv, with a more rugged look than many other small, sedan-platform sport-utilities such as the honda cr-v. For starters, escape sits a bit higher than many competitors (8. 1 inches of ground clearance), and the high profile is enhanced by its design. the new grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. Escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome. the trim levels are easy to distinguish from the front of the car. The base escape xls has a chrome grille and body-colored fascia from the bumper down. The xlt is identical, except for prominent fog lights in the front bumper. This adds the chrome grille and more, with brightwork flowing down into the skid plate and bumper. It looks like a big, shiny t on the front of the vehicle. some changes to the new escape are functional more than aesthetic. The side mirrors are larger than before, but ford claims their shape generates less noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds. we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthe 2008 ford escape interior is all new, and we like it. It's not significantly roomier or a leap forward in design, but it's well thought out and well executed. It's a definite improvement in ergonomic function and overall visual appeal, and it makes a nicer place to spend time. this is one of ford's best interiors in years in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either.
